KCTC Spam Filtering
What is "spam?"
Spam is simply a jargon term for unsolicited email, typically advertising.
Spam
costs very little for the sender, as ISPs and recipients incur most of the costs
of transmitting it.
What does the Spam Filter do?
The KCTC Spam Filter provides a solution for blocking spam in several ways:
- Subject:
Mail that contains specific words in the subject are blocked.
- Sender:
Identified senders of spam are blocked by email address, and/or IP address.
- Patterns:
Subjects repeated frequently over a short amount of time are blocked.
- Dictionary Spam Attack:
Senders that send to an alphabetical list of random names are blocked (aarona,
aaronb, aaronc, aarond, etc.).
- Prevent Relaying Abuse:
- Prevents other people outside of the KCTC user database from
sending mail through our server.
Does the Spam Filter only filter incoming mail?
Yes, Spam Filtering is only applied to incoming e-mail. If the filter
detects incoming spam, the email will be sent to your personal quarantine. Outgoing
e-mail is never filtered for Spam. (Note: Both incoming and outgoing e-mail
are scanned for viruses.)
How much does the Spam Filter service cost?
KCTC provides this service at no cost to our customers. The Spam Filter
will hopefully help to eliminate the amount of junk mail received by KCTC users.
